Steinunn María Þormar

Steinunn María Þormar is an Icelandic soprano singer and cellist. She graduated from the Iceland University of the Arts in spring 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in singing and cello performance. She has participated in various ensembles and performed diverse roles in the university’s opera productions. She has also played cello on several recordings. The summer of 2021, she collaborated with Ólína Ákadóttir and Hafrún Birna Björnsdóttir at the Hins húss (House of Creativity) Art Groups. 

In 2022, she toured with the chamber group Stundarómur in Iceland and Norway. During the summer of 2023, Stundarómur performed the concert Gimbillinn mælti at the Seigla music festival, held annually each August at Harpa in Reykjavík. That same summer, she received a grant from the Student Innovation Fund, together with Dr. Caylu Rosché, to transcribe lyrics from Icelandic art songs into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), translating them both literally and in terms of poetic meaning. She also produced videos in which she reads the texts. 

In the autumn of  2023, she participated in the project Look at the Music at Tjarnarbíó, a collaboration between the worlds of hearing-impaired individuals and music in a new art form. In June 2024, she received a scholarship from the Halldór Hansen Fund for outstanding academic achievement. In the summer of 2024, she performed in the concert series Englar og menn at Strandarkirkja. The summer of 2025 she and Ólína are working on putting together a new musical based on pieces by Jórunn Viðar. Steinunn is also a member of the stagegroup Gjallandi who are making a production of Sour Angelica. Steinunn is currently pursuing a master’s degree in singing at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
