British mezzo-soprano Sophie Kidwell is the winner of the Young Welsh Singer of the Year and a prize winner of the 43rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2025, where she was awarded a two-year soloist contract at Stadttheater Bühnen Bern. In the 2026/27 season, Sophie will make her role debuts there as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) and Amastre (Xerxes), among others.

A graduate of Durham University with a BA in Music, English Literature, and German, Sophie also completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Opera at the Hannover Musikhochschule in Germany.

Following her acclaimed debut as Carmen at Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen in 2022, Sophie reprised the role in the Austrian premiere of La Tragédie de Carmen at Landestheater Linz. From 2023–25, Sophie was a member of OperaAvenir at Theater Basel, where she sang her first Ring Cycle as Flosshilde (Das Rheingold & Götterdämmerung) and Grimgerde (Die Walküre), as well as the title role of Carmen. Further highlights include Maddalena (Rigoletto) at Theater Basel and Opéra de Lausanne, and Olga (Eugene Onegin) at Theater Aachen in 2026.

Concert highlights include Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with the Bern Symphony Orchestra, Elgar’s Music Makers in the Basel Stadtcasino and Mozart’s Requiem with the Basel Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ivor Bolton.
