Peter Máté

Pianist

Pianist Peter Máté was born in Czechoslovakia, but he has lived in Iceland since 1990. Peter completed a master's degree as a soloist and teacher from the Academy of Music in Prague. During his years studying, he won multiple prizes in his home country and later in international competitions, such as in Vercelli and Enna in Italy in 1986 and 1989.

Peter has performed solo recitals and chamber concerts (Tríó Reykjavík and Kópavogur Chamber Trio, among others) all over Iceland, as well as having toured France, the UK and the United States as well as Eastern European countries. Peter is the piano professor and director of instrumental studies at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, but also teaches piano at the Reykjavík College of Music. He has premiered multiple Icelandic piano and chamber works and has given lectures on Icelandic piano music abroad. Peter's complete recording of piano works by John Speight was chosen as the record of the year at the 2021 Icelandic Music Awards. Peter has been a guest professor at many foreign conservatories including Budapest, Brussels, Chicago, Graz, Helsinki, Lyon, Oslo, Poznan, Riga, Stockholm and Tallinn.
