Daniel Haugen

composer and euphonium player

Daniel Haugen is a Norwegian euphonium player and composer. He completed his bachelor’s degree in classical music performance at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025, where he was the first to graduate with the euphonium as a main instrument. During his bachelor’s degree, he also studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and at the Cologne University of Music and Dance.

As a euphonium player, much of his work naturally revolves around wind bands, brass bands, and chamber brass ensembles. He served as a musician in the Band of His Majesty The King’s Guard and now has engagements with the professional bands of the Norwegian Armed Forces as a substitute musician. He also performed as a soloist with the Norwegian Air Force Band for his final bachelor recital, playing his own composition. As a chamber musician, he is involved in different chamber ensembles for various types of freelance performances, but most regularly performs with his own brass quartet, Grenland Brasskvartett, where he also is the arranger and composer of music.

Besides being a performer, Daniel is also a member of the Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists, and is an active composer and arranger with a variety of engagements. Some of his projects include commissioned solo pieces for music exams at the University of Stavanger, music for dance performance with choreographer Ida Haugen, music for wind bands such as Telemark Messingensemble and His Majesty the King’s Guard’s Band, and chamber music for Grenland Brasskvartett and Stundarómur.

He also has experience working pedagogically with music, having worked as an instrumental teacher for Skien culture school and conductor for the children of Gimsøy Skolemusikk. His brass quartet, Grenland Brasskvartett, also emphasizes doing courses for local school bands.

In 2021 he was awarded for his musical activities in his region with a grant from Øyvind Strands Musikkfond and scholarship from the Music Council of Skien Municipality.

Daniel joined Stundarómur when the ensemble started up its activities in 2022 and has since then been composing and arranging for the ensemble.
